First European Settlers
Historically the first European settlers came in 1635, when settlers established the city of Newbury. The first dockyards were built in 1655. In 1764 the port was split from Newbury through the General Court of Massachusetts, which passed “An act for erecting part of the town of Newbury into a new town by the name of Newburyport Mass”. From the end of the 18th century up to the end of the 19th century Newburyport, Mass was a center for ship manufacturing. The first clipper was built in Newburyport MA. The city is also where the US Coast Guard was born.

In 1851 the city of Newburyport, MA annexed parts of Newbury and experienced in the period of industrialization a second heyday, which ended in the beginnings of the 20th century.
